Introduction

Slumdog Millionaire, a film directed by British director Danny Boyle (Boyle) based on the story of an Indian trio that emerged from the slums of Mumbai, India, won eight Academy Awards, also referred to as `the Oscars', at the 81st Annual Academy Awards3 held on February 22, 2009 (Refer to Exhibit I for a profile of Danny Boyle).

The film also won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)4 awards, and the Golden Globes5, besides bagging awards at The Toronto International Film Festival,6 and the Chicago International Film Festival7 in 2009 (Refer to Exhibit II for Other Awards Won by Slumdog Millionaire in 2008 and 2009).

Though the Indian cinema was very popular among Indian audiences for its entertainment value including its song and dance sequences, it was only in the 1990s that it started gaining popularity among the foreign audiences...

3] Academy Awards refers to the annual awards ceremony conducted by the Academy of Motion Pictures, arts and Sciences, Hollywood, US since 1929 for honoring the best talents in the industry. Over the years, it has become a largely publicized event with direct media telecast and large viewership worldwide.
4] The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) was established in 1947 to recognize outstanding creative work toward the advancement of British Films. It now encompasses all categories of moving images including television and webcasts. Its annual award function is termed as the BAFTA Awards.
5] The Golden Globe Awards or the Golden Globes are annual awards presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association of the US, an association of US journalists with foreign newspaper affiliations, since 1944, in recognition of outstanding achievements in the entertainment industry both domestic and foreign, and they bring the best motion pictures and television programs into the spotlight.
6] The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is an annual publicly attended film festival held in Toronto in Canada on the first Monday of September each year for duration of ten days screening 300-400 films in 23 screens in Toronto. It was originally planned to showcase mainstream Hollywood cinema, but later went on to become a fore-runner and premiering platform for films aspiring for the Oscars. The award instituted by TIFF is called the People's Choice Award, awarded to the best film for the year.
7] The Chicago International Film Festival is an annual film festival presented by Cinema/Chicago since 1965 with the aim of introducing "Chicago and the world to new filmmakers, new stories, and new points of view." It is held in October every year with awards titled Golden Hugo or the Grand prize and the Silver Hugo for the categories.
